Africa and Europe soccer highlights

AFRICA, Nairobi

10 man Gor Mahia battled to a barren draw against visiting USM Algers of Algeria in their second Group D match of the CAF Confederations cup at a rain soaked Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Gor canter back Joash Onyamgo was sent off for a second bookable offence but Gor Mahia held on and even had chances of killing off the games with two late chances from Tusiyenge and George Odhiambo.

Apart from the unpredictable rains, both sides had to endure a torrid trip to the stadium. Traffic snarl up along the ever busy Thika Superhighway forced both sides to get to the match venue with just under 50 minutes to kick off and therefore lessening warm up time.

Gor Mahia retained their second position after their Group D mates Yanga of Tanzania and Rayon Sports of Rwanda settled for a barren stalemate. Rayon sports have the same points as Gor while Yanga are last in the group with a solitary point.

The hosts were by far the better side in the tie and their efforts to gain maximum points were made harder when Joash Onyango was sent off shortly after the restart. Boniface Oluoch was an untroubled man in the entire game, only called upon once to to gather a feeble header from Ben Yahyia.

EUROPE, Lyon

Two goals from French forward Antoinne Griezmann and a late one from Gabi were enough for Atletico Madrid to win their third Europa League in nine years. Zambo Anguissa’s poor touch was punished by Griezmann to open the scoring before cheekily adding the second. Captain Gabi drilled in the third goal later on to lift the trophy they won in 2010 and 2012.

The outcome would have been different had Marseile Striker Germain taken an early chance before Griezmanns lethal finish put Atletico in control. Marseille skipper Dimitri Payet, an injury doubt before the game, lasted just half an hour.

Without their inspirational midfielder, the French side caused Atletico just one major scare in the second half as former Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou headed against the post.
