Galaxy fail to secure a win on Fan Appreciation Day

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

LA Galaxy's hope to win a final home season game came to a last minute 4-3 loss at the Dignity Health Sports Park.

When asked, Zlatan Ibrahimovic expressed that LA Galaxy did not deserved to get 3 points in that particular game. This might have come due to the reluctant defensive line and the attacking players inability to connect most of their long passes added to lots of missed opportunities. Zlatan was also quick to point out that defense starts from the attacking players so the whole team was responsible for the loss.

The Whitecaps came out strong and hungry to win even though the win did not count towards their entrance to playoffs. They must have come to shatter LA Galaxy's hope to be second position in the Audi 2019 MLS playoffs.

The opening goal was from the Whitecaps Conner kick, LA Galaxy's defender Polenta missed to clear the ball and Henry drove in the header.

At minute 22, Zlatan Ibrahimovic tapped in a pass from Cristian Pavon to make it even.

The Whitecaps were very quick to respond. A minute later, a shot from Theo Bair hit the crossbar adding more pressure on to the Galaxy defense. Minutes later, he turned a missed opportunity from Michaell Chirinos's shot into a 2-1 lead to mark the end of first half.

Uriel Antuna who had been trying to score or find Zlatan and Povon the whole game finally had probably the best chip shot volley to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. The set up he helped create involved, Cristian Pavon and Jona Dos Santos; After a pass to Pavon, Antuna made a long run creating a great opportunity for a long pass from Jona. The long pass forced Whitecaps goalie, Maxime Crépeau to come out and be involved with his defenders. With a clear vision and quick volley reaction, Antuna saw the back of the net!

What a back and forth goal scoring spree! Minutes later, Zac MacMath headed in a cross from Erik Godoy to keep the lead at 3-2.

While still pushing to move up ranks in the AUDI 2019 MLS cup as well as see the Fan appreciation and last game of the season go well for Galaxy; at the 86th minute Zlatan's header found Chris Pontius who pushed between three defenders and a goalie to find the back of the net. Super sub goal!

After Pontius goal, the Whitecaps could not let it rest, they stepped up their game. At the stoppage time, Erick Goddy struggled with Daniel Stress and earned a pass to Hwang In-beom and Derek Cornelius. The 1v1 quickly turned into a 2v1. Hwang gave a swift pass to Derek Cornelius who sealed the 4-3 win against LA Galaxy.

Galaxy are now ranked at 4th place. For LA Galaxy to move to second place, Sounders have to tie Minnesota and Galaxy will need to win their game against Houston Dynamo in October 6th.
