FC Barcelona Femeni kicked off their US tour with an emphatic 5-2 win over Bay FC at PayPal Park on Tuesday night in front of 14,187 fans.
The result seems appropriate given the matchup of the world's best women's team against NWSL's newest club, but the final scoreline does not do justice to at least 50 percent of the game, where the home side went toe-to-toe with the UEFA Champions League winners. In fact, Bay FC held the lead twice during the first half thanks to goals from Asisat Oshoala and Racheal Kundananji. Both players are familiar with the Catalonian giants, Oshoala having played for the squad from 2019-2024, and Kundananji against them while still in Liga F with Madrid CFF. (Kundananji famously broke a two-year Barca win streak by scoring a brace against them in 2023).
As is common with international friendlies, both sides used the opportunity to showcase new talent alongside their marquee players, with Bay FC utilizing 21 players and Barcelona newcomers Kika Nazareth and Ewa Pajor contributing goals and assists their debut season.
Come second half, Barca brought on their two Ballon d'or and FIFA Women's Player of the Year winners Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, giving excited fans a true showcase of world-class tactics and individual skill. A one-two play from Caroline Graham Hansen, a corner kick golazo from Mapi León, and back-to-back goals from Cláudia Pina and Patri Guijarro in the last two minutes of injury time closed the night for a decisive 5-2 clinic.
Bay FC will have a quick turnaround as they resume regular league play against Portland Thorns this Friday, in Portland, at 7 p.m.
Barcelona will finish their US Tour with a friendly against USL Super League team Dallas Trinity FC on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
