Lancaster, Calif. – August 17, 2024
The Lancaster Municipal Stadium was abuzz with excitement on Saturday as AV ALTA FC celebrated the groundbreaking of their new soccer-specific stadium. The event, which drew a significant turnout of VIPs and local supporters, marked a major milestone for the USL League One expansion team.
Among the distinguished guests were Mayor Rex Parris, USL League One President Lee O'Neill, and key members of AV ALTA FC’s leadership team, including Chairman J. David Harden, Co-Chairman Bob Roback, Founder and President John Smelzer, and Manager Nehemias "Nini" Blanco. Also in attendance were Panchito Ramirez, Head of Partnerships, Sports Director Zaki Tahari, and Head Coach Brian Kleiban.
The Lancaster City Council had previously approved over $17 million for the renovation project, which will transform the former baseball stadium, 'The Hangar,' into a cutting-edge soccer venue. Originally opened in 1996 as the home of the Lancaster JetHawks, the stadium will be reconfigured from its 4,600-seat capacity to a 5,300-seat, soccer-specific facility by late February 2025, just in time for AV ALTA FC’s inaugural season. The renovation project, undertaken in collaboration with architect NBBJ Design, will include the removal of existing baseball infrastructure, the installation of modular standing bleachers, new supporters’ terraces, and a modern artificial turf playing surface. Once completed, the upgraded facility will be only the fourth professional soccer-specific stadium in Southern California, setting the stage for a thrilling new chapter in local sports.
One of the highlights of the evening was the vibrant presence of The 661 Supporters Group, whose energy and enthusiasm were palpable. The supporters, now a non-profit organization, energized the crowd and showcased their commitment to the club. The stadium's new supporters' section will feature a standing-only area that can accommodate over 500 members of The 661, ensuring a rowdy and spirited atmosphere for every match.
