KC Current's Temwa Chawinga has broken the NWSL single-season goal record and secured KC Current their first-ever home playoff game with this rocket against Bay FC on Saturday, Oct. 12, at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif.
The 26-year-old Malawian phenom notched her 19th goal of the season in the 35th minute of the match, breaking a league record previously held by Sam Kerr since 2019. While Kerr's 2019 record was accomplished in 21 regular-season matches, this year's NWSL schedule is slightly longer at 26 games. (Neither Chawinga nor Kerr scored any of their record-setting goals from a penalty.)
Still, the Malawi international has had a remarkable first season in the league, also setting a record for the most consecutive goals in NWSL history. To date, she has 25 goal contributions for KC Current, and they still have two matches to go.
Manager Vlatko Andonovski praised the attacker's versatility, saying “She’ll assist on a goal, she starts the attack for us, she’ll bring the team into the attack, she's amazing defensively. She’s a superb defender. She’s just a great player." Chawinga arrived stateside from the Chinese Women's Super League, and her older sister, Tabitha, currently plays for Lyon.
Importantly, the 1-0 win also secured the club a home game for the first round of playoffs in November. On the flip side, expansion club Bay FC were not able to convert on their seven shots throughout the match, but remain in the all-important 8th spot going into playoff season. Currently three points ahead of Racing Louisville FC, Bay FC will look to secure points in their last two matches, one at home and one away.
