LOS ANGELES, CA - In a gripping opening to the MLS playoffs, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) took a key 2-1 victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BMO Stadium, setting the stage for an intense second leg in Vancouver. This win places LAFC one step closer to advancing, as they aim for a series sweep in the best-of-three matchup.

LAFC opened the scoring in the 30th minute after a VAR-reviewed handball by a Vancouver defender awarded them a penalty. Denis Bouanga, reliable in front of goal all season, slotted it home confidently for his 20th goal of the campaign, marking his seamless transition from regular season to playoffs.

Cristian Oliveira extended LAFC’s lead in the 57th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box, assisted by an intricate buildup between Mateusz Bogusz and Ryan Hollingshead. Olivera’s goal was a testament to LAFC’s attacking strength and the tactical finesse they’ve developed under coach Steve Cherundolo.

Vancouver, however, showed their resilience, pulling one back in stoppage time through Ryan Gauld, who added his fourth playoff goal after a hat-trick in the Wild Card round against Portland. The late effort wasn’t enough, though, as LAFC’s defense—anchored by Hugo Lloris in his MLS playoff debut—held firm to close out the game.

Adding to the emotional stakes, LAFC’s Carlos Vela made a much-anticipated return in the 86th minute, receiving a thunderous welcome from the crowd. Cherundolo noted the move was as much for the fans as it was tactical, underscoring the bond between the team and its supporters.
