LAFC Manager, Steve Cherundolo came into this US Open match with a different approach. Their usual starting lineup was nowhere to be seen, nor were many of them on the bench. While LA Galaxy maintained with their base as a starting lineup.
Second MLS game ever played and 19 years old, #27 Oridaz turned on a Galaxy Defender in the 6th minute and had a shot on frame but was saved. Oridaz had stood out to create goal scoring opportunities for LAFC but everything short of goal. In the 18th minute Galaxy Puig gracefully ran through the LAFC defense and with his craftiness managed to get a sombrerito on an LAFC defender and hit it with tres dedos making the LAFC goalkeeper work for the save.
In the 32nd minute Galaxy was fouled in the box and resulted in a PK which was taken by Galaxy Midfielder, Puig. However, Jakupovic managed to guess the penalty kick and make the huge save for LAFC. Keeping them at 0-0. LA Galaxy, Puig seemed to be the only one on his team trying to create goal scoring opportunities by taking players on, giving great passes, and shooting.
Near the end of the first half by 19 LAFC Bogusz has a shot on frame that was saved then cleaned up with a header from Opoku. Both being great saves by Galaxy’s Goalkeeper, Klinsmann.
Left footed shot by Galaxy’s, Tyler Boyd who was subbed in and immediately scored a far post shot within 3 minutes into the second half. Once this goal was scored, LA Galaxy looked like they woke up and looked way more confident than how they came into the game. 51st minute, Puig dribbled past 3 defenders and lighting hit it behind LAFC’s goalkeeper. Making it 2-0 for the “away” team.
LA Galaxy took full control and advantage of the game after that second goal. They moved the ball around from side to side confidently, and didn’t force to attack. LAFC looked young and just not as experienced as Galaxy in this round of 16. Puig remained a standout player in the match and managed to lead his team to a victory in the single elimination US Open Cup.
Final score: 2-0 LA Galaxy
